Hantavirus Isn’t COVID-26. Stop Spreading Lies.

You know the story. The MV Hondius. Nine infections. Three dead. It’s the Andes strain of hantavirus circling the globe and, true to form, the misinformation is already moving faster than the virus.

Twisted info travels fast. Real health channels in the U.S.? A mess. Since 2025 the U.S. walked away from the World Health Organization. The CDC is in chaos. USAID is gone. Research funding has evaporated. Who’s left to correct the record? No one, basically. So let’s clear the air before panic does its dirty work.

It Is Not A Coronavirus

Social media wants this to be “COVID-26.” It isn’t. Tedros Adhanom Gkebreyesus of the WHO went on X and said what needed saying. Hantavirus is not coronavirus. Never has been.

Coronaviruses live on the pandemic potential list. Hantaviruses do not. They belong to different families entirely. Don’t lump them together because they both sound scary.

You Can’t Just Catch It By Breathing The Same Air

This is where it gets distinct. Most hantavirus? Rodent waste. Pee, poop, saliva. You inhale contaminated dust, get it in your eyes or open wounds, and you’re done. Direct human transmission? Rare.

Only one type changes that. The Andes virus. That’s the one on the ship. A Dutch couple probably picked it up birdwatching near a landfill in Argentina. One got sick, then they boarded the ship. Now it’s spreading among crew and passengers. But listen. This isn’t SARS-CoV-2.

Human-to-human spread requires prolonged close contact with an actively shedding person. Fifteen minutes in a room? You’re fine. Touching a stranger’s coffee cup in a cafe? Fine. The risk exists if you’re handling infected bed linens, but that’s not exactly the vibe in a bustling port city.

Labs Did Not Make This Virus

Conspiracy theorists are claiming lab leakage. Again. There is zero evidence. Zero.

The Andes virus is lethal. We know this. The 70-year-old father died April 11 on the ship. His wife, 69, left in Saint Helena and died April 26. A German citizen died May 2. These deaths are tragic. They are consistent with the known behavior of a highly pathogenic wild virus. No lab signatures. Just a natural killer that prefers confined spaces. Like a cruise ship carrying 147 souls through Antarctica and West Africa for a month. That setting created the transmission chain, not a bioweapon.

Vaccines And Magic Pills? Please.

Now comes the nonsense about COVID-19 vaccines causing this outbreak. It’s baseless. Add it to the pile of claims about vaccines turning you into magnets. Ignore it.

What about Ivermectin? The same claim pops up for mPox, measles, COVID. Here too? No. Scientific evidence does not support it. It doesn’t fix the headache or fever. It won’t stop Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). It won’t prevent Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal syndrome (HFRS).

HPS destroys lungs. Fatality rate? Over a third. HFRS attacks the kidneys. Blood vessels leak. Pressure drops. Death rate ranges from <1% to 15% depending on the strain. If you’re infected, you need support. Oxygen. Ventilation. Dialysis. IV fluids. Nothing cures it directly. Just keeps you alive until your body fights it off.

Diagnose it fast. Test early. That matters.

So do we need to quarantine for 42 days? Yes. Incubation can hit seven weeks. The Hondius group is locked down. That limits spread. But misinformation has no quarantine.

Without effective public health communication, twisted info wins.

We are losing the fight against lies while the virus itself stays put. The Andes strain isn’t jumping to you at the grocery store. The fake news is. And that is much harder to stop.

Which one worries you more?
