Body weight drops, and the head fails to grow at the expected rate. Some patients also experience hyperammonemia, which is increased ammonia levels in the blood.
Why Is There No Cure?
Currently, there is no cure for Rett syndrome. The progressive nature of the neurological decline means that treatment focuses on management rather than reversal. The goal is to improve quality of life and address specific complications.
Therapies play a major role in daily care. Physical therapy helps maintain mobility and muscle health. Speech therapy supports communication efforts. Medications are also prescribed to manage secondary issues. These drugs help control anxiety and alleviate depression, which are common psychological challenges for those affected.
How Is It Diagnosed and Managed?
Diagnosis usually follows the observation of the specific symptom cluster mentioned above. Because it mimics other developmental disorders, careful evaluation is necessary. The distinction lies in the MECP2 mutation and the specific pattern of regression.
Management strategies vary by patient needs. A multidisciplinary approach works best. Doctors, therapists, and caregivers collaborate to tailor interventions.
